10th Moscow Pre-Moot | Workshop & Conference

On 23-24 March 2019, the tenth Moscow Pre-Moot for the XXVI Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot was held at the Faculty of Law, Moscow State University. The event was attended by 24 teams from Austria, Belarus, France, Germany, Moldova, Russia, and Turkey.

The event was organised by the Law Department of the Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Russian Arbitration Center at the Russian Institute of Modern Arbitration.

On the eve of the practice rounds, 22 March 2019, a "How to Win in Vienna" workshop and an academic conference were held to discuss:

  • the power of a tribunal to adapt contractual terms;
  • the power to admit evidence obtained illegally; and
  • novelties of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) Arbitration Rules.

The events were held in the Library of the International and Comparative Legal Research Center.

As part of the workshop, a team from the National Research University Higher School of Economics, winners of the XXV Vis Moot represented by Gayana Gulyan, Vladimir Kostsov, and their coaches, Elena Mazetova and Elza Dauletshina, shared the secrets of successful performances and effective coaching.

The conference included speeches and presentations of:

  • Dr Christian Aschauer, Professor of the University of Graz;
  • Milos Ivkovic, Counsel at OBLIN Rechtsanwalte;
  • Michael Swainston QC, Barrister at Brick Court Chambers;
  • Olga Tsvetkova, Counsel at Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners;
  • Joe Liu, Deputy Secretary General of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre.

The sessions were moderated by:

  • Anton Asoskov, Professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University;
  • Egor Chilikov, Partner at Petrol Chilikov;
  • Andrey Gorlenko, Executive Administrator of the Russian Arbitration Center at the Russian Institute of Modern Arbitration.
